Ratan Tata, former Chairman of Tata Group, passed away on 9 October 2024, at the age of 86. He was widely recognised for his transformative leadership, which elevated the Tata Group through his unwavering commitment to excellence, innovation, and ethical business practices.
Under Tata's stewardship from 1991 until his retirement in 2012, the company expanded its global presence while maintaining its moral compass. His significant contributions included founding Tata Teleservices in 1996 and taking Tata Consultancy Services public in 2004. He played a crucial role in acquiring landmark companies, such as Tetley, Jaguar Land Rover, and Corus Steel, solidifying Tata Group’s reputation in the global corporate landscape.

An official statement from Tata Group expressed deep sorrow over his passing, stating, “It is with a profound sense of loss that we bid farewell to Mr. Ratan Naval Tata, a truly uncommon leader whose immeasurable contributions have shaped not only the Tata Group but also the very fabric of our nation.” The statement, signed by N Chandrasekaran, continued, “For the Tata Group, Mr. Tata was more than a chairperson. To me, he was a mentor, guide, and friend. He inspired by example. With an unwavering commitment to excellence, integrity, and innovation, the Tata Group under his stewardship expanded its global presence while always remaining true to its moral compass. Mr. Tata’s dedication to philanthropy and the development of society has touched the lives of millions. From education to healthcare, his initiatives have left a deep-rooted mark that will benefit generations to come.”
Chandrasekaran also conveyed condolences on behalf of the entire Tata family, affirming that Tata’s legacy would continue to inspire as they upheld the principles he passionately championed.
Just days before his passing, Tata addressed concerns regarding his health on X, stating, “I am aware of recent rumours circulating regarding my health and want to assure everyone that these claims are unfounded. I am currently undergoing medical check-ups due to my age and related medical conditions.” He emphasised, “There is no cause for concern. I remain in good spirits and request that the public and media respect and refrain from spreading misinformation.”
Beyond his business acumen, Ratan Tata was revered for his humility and integrity, receiving numerous accolades, including the Padma Bhushan in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008, India’s third and second-highest civilian honors, respectively. His legacy extends beyond the corporate realm, profoundly influencing both the business community and society at large.
